Computational studies of reduced states of nitrogenase
- Hybrid QM/MM modelling was used to investigate the reduced states of the N\(_2\)ase cofactor, FeMoco: E\(_1\), E\(_2\) and E\(_4\). Calculations constrained by new Mo, Fe EXAFS structural data suggest a likely model for E\(_1\) as consisting of an Fe reduction in the MoFe3S3C sub-cubane and a protonated belt sulfide. Multiple models of the E\(_2\) state were calculated and the results suggest a model featuring either a double Fe-reduced, double protonated belt-sulfide or a hydride and a terminal sulfhydryl group to be favorable. A mechanism for HE\(_2\) formation was calculated from the hydride model. Calculations on the EE\(_4\) state further suggest the importance of belt sulfide hemilability with (\(\mu^{2}\)-H)\(_2\)-\(\eta^{1}\)-SH models found to be most favorable. NE\(_2\) binding was explored for these models and terminal NE\(_2\) binding to FeE\(_2\) and FeE\(_6\) was found to be favorable; a feasible mechanism for reductive elimination is suggested. Finally, the mechanisms of N\(_2\)H\(_4\)/N\(_2\)(CH\(_3\))\(_2\) reduction by [MoFe\(_3\)S\(_4\)] model cubanes were explored by calculations.
