Gli ebrei e il giudaismo nelle fonti armene

  • This article provides an overview of ]ews and Judaism in Armenian sources. lt starts with an analysis of an eschatological prophecy that has been transmitted with the title On the Advent of the Antichrist and the End of the World. It explores the representation of Jews in this source and their function in the end of the world scenario. lt then goes on to reveal that there are virtually no specific compositions in Armenian that could be defined as belonging to the genre of adversus Judaeos texts. Nor were there translations of such texts, either from Syriac or from Greek, penned by the Fathers of the Church. Yet, some medieval authors, such as Movses Xorenac'i and P'awstos Buzand, mention Jews in Late Antique Armenia, while the 7\(^{th}\)-century Sebeos explains the rise of a new religion - Islam - and Islamic conquests as something instigated by the Jews. This was a line of reasoning rather common among other Christian authors of the time. On the other hand, hagiographical sources open other perspectives on the image of ]ews and Judaism and three works, all of them translations, are considered: the Miraculous story of the image of Beirut, the Story of a sinful bishop who fornicated with a Jewish woman, and the Martyrdom of Abd al-Massih. Despite the paucity of sources on Jews and Judaism in Armenian, archeological data can force us to completely reevaluate our ideas of a]ewish presence in Armenia. The article closes with a note on the Jewish cemetery in the village of Yeghegis (Vayots Dzor, Armenia) and a recent survey conducted there by an international team of experts.
