Reactions at interfaces of gold-titania nanocatalysts
- The heterogeneous catalyst consisting of highly dispersed gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) supported on titania is used for the selective oxidation of alcohols. Hereby, potentially hazardous oxidation reagents may be replaced by molecular oxygen from the air. In this thesis \(\textit {ab initio}\) molecular dynamics techniques are used to investigate the oxygen activation at AuNP catalysts: If the oxygen is adsorbed at the AuNP/titania interface, some charge is transferred from the AuNP towards the oxygen molecule. This charge occupies an antibonding orbital of the oxygen molecule facilitating its dissociation. In the aqueous phase additional charge is transferred towards the oxygen molecule due to the modified charge localization at the AuNP as a result of its solvation. In addition, the oxygen molecule may be protonated by the surrounding water causing a stabilization of the charge transfer reaction. Thus, aqueous solvation additionally enhances the catalytic activity of AuNPs on titania towards oxygen activation.
