Development of tungsten alloy plasma-facing materials for the fusion power plant
- Tungsten is the preferred first wall material of the future fusion reactor DEMO. Self-passivating Tungsten-chromium-yttrium (W-Cr-Y) alloys suppress W-oxidation in case of a reactor accident due to the build-up of a \(Cr_{2}O_{3}\) scale on the alloy’s surface. During regular plasma operation, the alloy should behave like pure W due to preferential sputtering. Within this work, the plasma behaviour of the alloy was investigated in the linear plasma devices PSI-2 and Magnum-PSI under varying plasma compositions, ion energies, fluxes and fluences. Additionally, ion beam analysis of the surface and simulations with the Monte Carlo Code SDTrimSP were carried out and the plasma impact on the oxidation behaviour was investigated. Experiments und simulations offer valuable clues to the material’s erosion as well as segregation and diffusion within the material; the temperature and plasma parameter range in which WCrY shows W-like erosion behaviour was determined.
