Synthesis of multi-metallic catalysts applied in higher alcohol synthesis from syngas
- Higher alcohol synthesis (HAS) via CO hydrogenation is a promising energy-efficient route for large-scale production of important chemical feedstock and alternative fuels. Non-noble metal catalysts based on Cu, Co and Fe are considered promising systems for industrial applications. CO adsorption on Cu occurs molecularly, while CO is adsorbed dissociative on Co and Fe. A well-balanced interplay of these two steps is assumed to be a requirement for selective higher alcohol formation. Based on the idea of enabling the synthesis of several metal cations in one single phase, hydrotalcites (HT) as precursors seem to be promising systems to achieve close structural vicinity of the active components. The present contribution describes the characterization and testing of HT-based catalysts with different amounts of Cu and Co in order to achieve reliable data for structure-activity relationships in HAS.
