A structural approach towards the classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres
- The problem of classifying isoparametric hypersurfaces M\(^{n}\) in spheres S\(^{n+1}\) is still not completely solved. In my paper I develop a structural approach towards this classification problem. The basic idea for the structural approach is the following: instead of working with the family of parallel surfaces \(F_{t}\)(M\(^{n}\)), I work with their image under the Gauss map which is a Lagrangian submanifold \(\iota\)(M\(^{n}\)) in the Grassmannian, i.e. in the complex quadric Q\(^{n}\) in CP\(^{n+1}\). The key fact is that all the relevant geometric invariants of \(F_{t}\)(M\(^{n}\)), i.e. the metric \(g_{t}\), the Weingarten map A\(_{t}\), and its covariant derivative, translate into natural geometric invariants of the Lagrangian submanifold \(\iota\)(M\(^{n}\)) in Q\(^{n}\) which are now independent of \(\it t\). Naturally, all the classical approaches to the classification problem can be translated into this more structural picture.
