• In this thesis, the savings behavior of immigrants is being investigated. The empirical analysis focuses predominantly on the immigrant population in Germany but also comprises international comparisons. The German Socio-Economic Panel represents the main source of data for the analysis of immigrants to Germany. The empirical findings indicate that the German welfare system may face unforeseen burdens in the coming years. In the next 20 years, nearly two million immigrant workers will reach retirement age. This group of immigrants appears to have a substantial lower savings rate than comparable natives. The empirical findings for Germany are attributable to an immigration policy that has focused predominantly on short-term economic needs and neglected long-run effects of immigration.
• In dieser Dissertation wird das Sparverhalten von Einwanderern untersucht. Die empirische Analyse konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf Einwanderer in Deutschland, enthält aber auch internationale Vergleiche. Das deutsche Sozio-ökonomische Panel bildet die wichtigste Datenquelle für die Analyse von in Deutschland lebenden Einwanderern. Die empirischen Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass das deutsche Wohlfahrtssystem in den kommenden Jahren unvorhergesehenen Belastungen gegenüberstehen könnte. In den kommenden 20 Jahren werden fast zwei Millionen ausländische Arbeiter das Rentenalter erreichen. Diese Gruppe von Einwanderern scheint erheblich niedrigere Sparraten aufzuweisen als vergleichbare Einheimische. Die empirischen Ergebnisse für Deutschland lassen sich auf eine Einwanderungspolitik zurückführen, die sich hauptsächlich an kurzfristigen ökonomischen Bedürfnissen orientiert und langfristige Effekte der Einwanderung vernachlässigt hat.
