Functional specificity of callosal connections in the cat visual cortex

  • The corpus callosum is the main commissure of mammals’ brain and transfers visual information between both cerebral hemispheres. This interhemispheric transfer was studied in the cat visual areas 17 and 18 by combining intrinsic signals optical imaging with callosal axons labeling. The layout and the retinotopic organization of the regions activated through the corpus callosum were characterized both in intact and split-chiasm animals. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that individual callosal axons mainly link cortical regions in visuotopic correspondence and with the same orientation preference. These results reveal a highly specific organization of visual callosal connections and suggest a functional role of the corpus callosum in the processing of orientation information of visual stimuli, in the central and ipsilateral parts of the visual field. These connections could be involved in the fusion of the two visual hemifields in a single visual field as well as in depth perception.
