Effects of omega 3 fatty acids on vascular function in subjects with Type 2 diabetes mellitus

  • \(\bf Objective:\) We investigated the effects of n-3 FAs on vascular function in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. \(\bf Method:\) In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover manner, 34 subjects received daily 2 g either n-3 FAs or placebo for 6 weeks. After each therapy, we measured macrovascular (FMD) and microvascular (reactive hyperemia) function fasting as well as following a high fat meal. \(\bf Results:\) Fasting FMD remained unchanged following n-3 FAs or placebo. Postprandial FMD decreased after placebo with 38% - an effect significantly reduced by n-3 FAs supplementation (13%). Postprandial reactive hyperemia remained unchanged after placebo, whereas it improved significantly after n-3 FAs supplementation (maximum increase 27%). Adiponectin and leptin didn´t significantly change after placebo or n-3 FAs. \(\bf Conclusions:\) Our results suggest a protective effect of n-3 FAs on vascular function.
