Nanostructured catalysts for the application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells
- In this thesis, the synthesis and the electrochemical characterization of advanced nanostructured catalysts for the application in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM-FCs) are discussed. A new synthetic approach, named confined-space alloying, was developed to prepare highly dispersed Pt-Ni bimetallic catalysts embedded in the framework of mesoporous hollow graphitic spheres (HGS). The resulting catalysts showed remarkable mass activities for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction, coupled with an excellent stability in the operational range of PEM-FCs. In the second part, the actual benefits of the mesoporous framework at the catalyst layer level are examined via a thorough \(\textit {in situ}\) investigation. Finally, a new synthetic procedure to prepare Hollow Mesoporous Carbon Spheres is presented. The flexibility of this scalable method allowed for the control of the morphological and textural features of the carbon spheres, a distinct asset over classic multi-step nanocasting routes.
