Automated analysis of contrast enhanced ultrasound imaging of perfusion in brain tumor tissue
- Tumors are one of the most fatal diseases in first world countries. Especially in brain tumors, intraoperative support for the resection is crucial for a positive outcome of the treatment. The uncontrolled vascular growth induced by many tumors has a influence on the perfusion dynamics. These dynamics can be visualized by contrast enhanced ultrasound imaging. In this work, the dynamics of contrast agent time courses obtained from intracranial ultrasound recordings of glioblastoma patients were investigated. The proposed automatic approach uses model function to depict the dynamics of single pixel time courses, spatial features to incorporate the surrounding tissues and support vector machines to differentiate tumor and non-tumor tissue. The results of the classification showed a significantly better performance with the developed model function compared to three commonly used model functions. A classification error rate of 5.85% was achieved using a kernelized SVM.
